As schools and trusts continue to face increasing pressure around compliance, sustainability, and capacity, strategic planning for capital funding is more important than ever. Several key government funding streams are expected to open in 2025, and early preparation will be crucial to maximising your chance of success.
If you’re considering site improvements, energy efficiency upgrades, or expansion projects, now is the time to start planning.
Below is an overview of the estimated launch windows and intended purposes of the main education sector capital funding schemes in 2025.
School Condition Allocation (SCA)
Estimated launch: March 2025
Who it’s for: Larger multi-academy trusts (MATs) and other responsible bodies managing multiple schools.
Purpose: To support capital maintenance and building condition improvements across the school estate.
This funding is distributed directly to eligible MATs to manage internally, allowing greater autonomy over how capital needs are prioritised across their schools.
Low Carbon Skills Fund (LCSF)
Estimated launch: May 2025
Estimated deadline: May 2025
Who it’s for: Schools and trusts looking to develop Heat Decarbonisation Plans (HDPs).
Purpose: To fund professional consultancy support to produce HDPs, which are a prerequisite for PSDS applications.
This short application window requires readiness in advance. Schools considering long-term energy efficiency or carbon reduction projects should prepare now.
Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS)
Estimated launch: October 2025
Estimated deadline: November 2025
Who it’s for: Public sector organisations, including schools and academy trusts.
Purpose: To support capital works that reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency.
Projects must be aligned with a completed Heat Decarbonisation Plan. Funding typically covers the replacement of fossil fuel heating systems with low-carbon alternatives, along with other energy-saving measures.
School-Based Nursery Capital Grant
Estimated launch: October 2025
Estimated deadline: December 2025
Who it’s for: Schools planning to create or expand nursery provision.
Purpose: To fund the establishment or enhancement of nursery facilities within school settings.
This grant is designed to improve access to early years provision and support local authorities in meeting childcare demand.
Condition Improvement Fund (CIF)
Estimated launch: October 2025
Estimated deadline: December 2025
Who it’s for: Single-academy trusts, smaller MATs, and sixth form colleges.
Purpose: To address significant condition, compliance, and health and safety issues.
This remains a competitive bidding process. Projects must be well-evidenced and demonstrate urgent need, value for money, and deliverability.
